HISTORY OF NORTH CITY CHURCH HAMILTON

In 1988, a prophetic word was brought to the Hamilton Connections Church in Grey Street, to plant a church in the North of Hamilton. North City Apostolic was born out of that prophesy.

On the 19th of February 1989, North City Connections Church had their first service at 35 Herbert Road. We rented the property off the Church of Christ until we purchased it on the 10th of May 1989. It was the only building available in area at the time.

At our first service we had 24 adults and 7 children.

Noel and Ruth Bowker led the church planting team.

On September 1st 1990, Noel was ordained as a Pastor.

In April 1991 the church commenced paying Pastor Noel for 2 days and National Office paid 1 day for a year.

In March 1992 we began to feel the need for more room so we rented the Bankwood Primary School Hall for our morning services. We considered alterations to the Herbert Road property and also considered buying the house next door.

We moved back into the Herbert Rd building in December 1992 and continued meeting there in cramped conditions.

In April 1993 Ruth Bowker noticed on the front page of the Waikato Times, that the Fairfield United Rugby Clubrooms had been sold. Noel rang Margaret Tosland a Real Estate Agent who worked very hard to secure an agreement for the purchase of the property.

The property consisted of 5 acres and the building. As we could not afford to buy the whole property Margaret Tosland advertised and sold the 4 acres, leaving us with 1 acre and the building.

We sold the Herbert Road Property to a builder who converted it into a home. It has now been made into a Kindergarten.

We took over the Rototuna Road property on June 11th 1993 and set to work cleaning it up and altering the property.
We had our first service at Rototuna on Sunday 26th of September 1993. We had 52 adults and 31 children at that service.

In April 1996 we were offered two bunkhouses from the Ngaruawahia Christian Holiday Camp. We set to work refurbishing them. We made them into a large meeting room with two offices at one end and 3 Sunday School rooms in the other.

March 99 Buildings freehold.

January 99 as we were needing more room and a larger facility, we endeavoured to purchase back the field next door. Mr McFadden decided that he wanted $500,000 plus GST. We decided that if God wanted us to have it He would have to provide the money. It was suggested that Noel contact Margaret Tosland . Noel wasn't sure what he needed to ring her for but she got excited and said that she had a developer that would buy the 4 acres and our property, which changed our whole thinking. We then set about to look for another property.
A land agent told us about one that was coming on the market the next week. 6 Acres with a house on it in Cate Road. Noel and Ruth Bowker decided to sell their house and buy the house and 1 acre off the church.
The person that Margaret Tosland thought was interested fell away she tried another developer who was very interested but they fell away as well.
We then decided to market the Rototuna property our selves. We put a notice on the notice board outside the church, which attracted a lot of interest, with two Churches submitting agreements.
On Sunday 27 June the church was sold unconditionally to The Reformed Church. They agreed to accept responsibility for sealing the carpark, with settlement being Feb 2000.

The plans etc went into the council mid June for the resource consent and subdivision of the new property in Cate Road (now North City Road).

In December 1999 our New Church Building was started in Cate Rd which is at the Northern end of Cate Rd almost at Kay Rd. The church purchased the 5 acres of land on which we built the church and also ran a Work Based Training Scheme.

The Dutch Reformed Church took over the property on 14th March. As we didn't have another place to have our services the Reformed Church allowed us to continue to have our services in the Rototuna Rd building on Sunday afternoons at 2pm.
It was definitely a faith venture and we were stretched as a congregation. We needed $150,000. before completion date we are stepping out as the lord said through Prophetic words that we were to step out and he would provide the finance. We are stood on that word and believed for God to come through.

June 4th 2000 we had our last service at Rototuna Rd and had our first service in our new building on Sunday 11th June 2000. We had our opening service on 29th July 2000.
We moved the two refurbished buildings from Rototuna Rd to our new property and used them for children's ministry and we also ran a training program for youth 15-17years from 1999 till 2007.

In 2006 we were offered two more prefab buildings which we are being used for youth and children's ministry and also community use.

We run a Toy Library from one of the buildings.
